Visual Art: Set Design
“I wanted to illustrate the mysterious conversation which happens between the Natural and the Supernatural during a worship set. Earth and the natural moving upward in motion, and yet Heaven responding towards us, downward and yet from within. In order to conceptualize this conversation visually, my team and I cut down seven oak trees from some undeveloped land on Bethel church’s extended property and suspended them from the lighting grid, roughly 12” off the ground.
If you look closely, they appeared to be levitating. The marconi bulbs were suspended from the lighting grid, but appear to emerge from within the branches. On the screen behind the band, contributions from local visual artists filled the screen to give visual aid to the songs and their meanings. Our method of display was through two high powered projectors onto a shark’s tooth scrim as a screen.”
